Hi, I'm new to the discussions. I've been quilting for about 3 years and have a passion for hand applique (needle turn) and piecing complicated stars.
I'm crazy about bright colors, jewel tones, and batiks.
Also like to piece miniatures.

But I need a quilt carrying bag for my big quilts so I can take them to show and tell at the guild. I have seen one with long wooden handles that looks perfect but I could use a pattern. Any suggestions??

I don't have a pattern. But if all else fails...you can go to Walmart and buy these huge huge ziploc bags. They are usually found over by the vacuum cleaner bags Or on the bottom shelf where the ziplock bags are. These bags are big enough that you can carry a finished quilt in them. If I remember correctly there is maybe 7 or 8 bags in the box for like $5 or $6.
I hope that you do find what your looking for. And welcome to the board from Oregon. :)

Now is when you make a big , pretty tote bag, and have straps attached to dowel rods. Sort of like a huge casserole tote. Oh, asnd welcome, too, from Ky.!!

My mom made this bag for me two yrs ago. It is called a carpet bag. It can hold 5 quilts or what ever else you want to carry. When she made the bag my dad was throwing out a broom that broke. She used the broom for the handles. Not sure about the pattern will need to ask her.

I don't know how young you are, but if you're older, you might want to try one of the rolling things they have available so you're not lugging it all over heck and gone.

I've been to a few quilt shows where you got tired walking around empty handed, let alone lugging a heavy quilt or two.

That said, Babycakes, I love your mom's tote.

There is a great quilt tote pattern in a Georgia Bonesteel book--think it is More Lap Quilting, but not positive....have all my books piled up while i re-do the sewing room....
I have made one. it holds all your stuff, including a ruler...

I have 3 Georgia Bonesteel books - I'll check them. I'd rather not go with plastic. But I love the one Babycakes' Mother made for her - the one I've seen that I like is very similar except the wood handles go all the way through tabs at the top. I will also check the websites supplied by Okiepastor. So much help. Thank you.

I have found two patterns:

They are called log carriers, but I have seen these in use for carrying multiple quilts.

One is on the JoAnns website in their pattern section.

The other is on the Bernina website.

These are both free patterns. The JoAnns one is very simple, while the Bernina one is a little more involved.

Go to Goodwill - find two quilted pillowshams. Sew them together on three sides and add a carrying strap. Makes a perfect quilt carrier.

Can someone post the link to the free patterens at Joanns because I can't find it

Aunt Doggie 05-30-2011 05:46 PM

I have used the "Sam's Club" bags... They fold up nicely when not in use, and I can put small quilt/wall hangings in it easily to take to guild meetings.

Sam's sells the bags in sets of two.

They are really strong, to hold canned goods, so know they will hold precious fabric items!!

shrabar 05-30-2011 06:15 PM

Why not just make one if you like you can see mine .

Here you go........ I had to hunt, too, but it's under "log carrier" and I was searching for "quilt carrier" http://www.joann.com/static/project/0612/P407250C.pdf (edited to add: Aurora said it is under "log carrier", but I wasn't thinking when I used the search function there)
I can't find anything under the Bernina site for this. Anybody have a link? TIA
