Quilted Prayer Shawl

Hi,
I am new to your Quilting Board. I have done some wallhanging, and some quilts.
I have alot to learn about quilting. I just joined a quilting guild called Common Threads in Wisconsin.

I have a question for you. I want to make a quilted prayer shawl and I can not fine a pattern. I have seen out there patterns to use fleece. I found two patterns on the internet. One is a kwik sew #3173 and the other is Brensan #BSS140. They are more like a jacket. I want the item to fit around the neck and cover the arms plus
I would like it made out of cotton.
Please if anyone has some suggestion I would appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Sunnydays from Wisconsin

Will you need the prayer shawl to be very flexible like a shawl that you would use for ordinary wearing, or can it it be stiffer like a quilted throw to cover up with while watching TV? Will the pattern need to have symbolism relating to the prayers? Will it need to be specific to the religion of the user? Do you want it to be fringed? Are the colors significant?

Welcome, from Texas!

Last year, I crocheted a shawl, in a semi-circle shape. Would something like that work? You could even cut out a small semi-circular shape, for the neck. If you use a soft, thin batting, it should have fairly good drape. Don't be afraid to experiment with making your own patten. Designers start out as just regular people. :)

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. You might try looking through patterns for bed jackets. There might be something there you can adapt. Most of the prayer shawls on QB I have seen are just a rectangle of fabric without any fitted areas. There are some great panels with scriptures available and Favoritefabrics.com had some nice cotton fabric with tiny gold crosses.

I'm not at home right now, but I have a quilt book that has a number of patterns geared towards breast cancer survivors and in it is a pattern for a quilted prayer shawl. I won't be home until the end of the week, but will look up the name and send it at that time.

Welcome from Iowa and thanks for the idea you gave me.

My sister knits shawls for her church. We lost our Mother this winter and I plan to make memory pillows for the family. However my sister picked out over 75 favorites with "Mom wore this all the time" and I was thinking there would be no way to get them all in a pillow. Maybe I can make her a memory shawl instead. I think I will try to just do a rectangle or a triangle. i think I'll figure out the size and shape I want, make a foundation and try a crazy quilt of my scraps for practice. Thanks again for the idea.

I made this shawl from Moda Bake Shop. You could always modify it to bigger or smaller
