Borders bankruptcy

Our news tonight said that Borders book stores were filing bankruptcy and that clearance sales could begin as early as this weekend. Might find some good values on quilting books and mags. They are closing 200 stores.

That is a surprise, a Borders store opened here in Perth a few years ago. When I worked in the book trade, the smaller traders were terrified Borders would decimate the "little guys"...some fell by the wayside - but the book trade is hard...very small profit margins. Wonder if this will just be a US happening...I believe Woolworths folded in Britain, but here in Aus. they are one of the big two...Coles being the other.

I received an email from Borders today, written by the CEO. It said that they are closing the poor performing stores, but it sounds like everything else is staying the same :D:D:D

The Borders here (formerly Waldenbooks) closed a couple of years ago. They were the ONLY option for books (not counting walmart and grocery stores) within an hour's drive. Now the Borders an hour away is closing too. It doesn't affect me because even when I go to that town, I go to Barnes & Noble but it's still a bummer. :(
