I visited Geta's site when she building that one. The ball looks like it is jumping out of the quilt and she did it by drafting individual pieces. Some of the edge pieces were little slivers of fabric to construct the 3D effect of the ball.
It's an optical illusion and squinting does not help. It is one of the most amazing quilts I've seen.
