wether you wash or not, you can end up with off-grain fabric. whenever i fold, this is what i do. cut or torn, if the weave started out off-grain, you still have to straighten it out. i do it across my bed when i do long lengths.

thanks. I was just going to wash some fabric and now know how to get the fabric on grain.

I'm so glad to know this. Makes it really easy to straighten fabric before cutting.
