I would NEVER own an iron without auto shut off and I always unplug my iron when I walk out of the room for any length of time. Several years ago a neighbor's house was gutted by fire because of an iron left on. My home and possessions are worth a minute or so on inconvenience.

I hate the shut off feature for quilting, because I don't stand at the iron steadily while sewing. I sew a while, then press. It's a pain to come back to the iron to press and find it's off and you have to wait for it to heat back up. I turn the iron off when I'm done or leave the room for any length of time.
I bought a cheap Black and Decker because the bottom of the line models are the ones with auto shutoff.

I have my iron a big light over the ironing board plugged into the same power strip with one of those rocker on/off switches. My Rowenta has a shut-off, but it heats back up so fast that I never experience any inconvenience. With the light and shut-off I have made my iron safety foolproof. I hate to admit it but as I have aged, I find I sometimes make mistakes. I feel better with these 2 safety precautions.

I used to go off and leave my auto shut off on also. I had a friend that had a curling iron short out and burn their house.. I just don't trust these china made appliances anymore.. I always unplug mine just to be on the safe side. There is always a chance that something can malfunction.

For some silly reason I've always unplugged my iron when I'm finished using it. Have done this for decades. It's just an ingrained habit for me. Same with the curling iron. Don't know why. Don't worry about any other appliances being plugged in but those two....
