Great article and well written. It pretty much mirrors all the info on Tabberone site. We, as quilters, ALL need to understand what is being said so we aren't being taken as fools by pattern makers any longer.

When I read something like this, the first thing I look for is: Does the person have a legal background & where do they live? She's a British citizen & lives in the Cayman Islands. Does this still apply? Might, might not. She does have a disclaimer "Different laws may also apply to different regions of the world. Check your local laws." I would look for an article published in the country in which I reside.

When it comes right down to it, it makes sense. Patterns are basically geometry - straight lines and curves. That's it. How you manipulate them to get what you want to make is the pattern. Pull-on shorts, flip flops, bicycles, sewing machines, all made by various manufacturers all over the world, and all need fundamentals to make them work and the designer provides the interest.

Copyright has been a contentious issue for quilters in Ontario (Canada) for the last 4 or 5 years. My personal view is to err on the side of caution. I was doing a quilt for a raffle to support a distress centre. I had the perfect pattern and emailed the designer, Lisa Moore of Quilts With a Twist https://www.quiltswithatwist.com I explained what I wanted to do with the finished quilt, and asked her permission to use her pattern, since there would be monetary gain for the distress center (not me). Lisa was very happy that I asked and very magnanimously sent another pattern as well to use for any charitable purpose. I assured her that I always put the designer's name on the label of each quilt I make for provenance purposes. It only took a few minutes on my comptuter and the outcome was better than I expected. Not only did the distress centre benefit, but Quilts of Valour Canada has as well. My life mantra is "common sense and common courtesy". Works every time.Originally Posted by MartiMorga

Rules added by the designer or company are not law. Only copyright law is law. Anyone can make a rule but no one has to follow it. Straight from an attorney's mouth that handles copyright issues.
