I take the lazy way....just wad up an old towel on top of the TV tray. Works great. Lay a small cutting mat on top of that when I need to trim things as well. Works a treat when paper piecing.

I have 3 ironing surfaces. TV trays just aren't big enough for me. I have a storage unit on casters and an ironing mat with a grid that fits well on top.

I made one of these a couple of years ago, and I just love it! So convenient.

I don't think tv trays would be strong enough. Of course I haven't tried one. I just jump up and use my tabletop ironing board.

They are, Phyllis. I made mine a few months ago and use it all the time.

I followed this tute and made a great ironing surface. Then the legs broke and were beyond repair. I took the top off and carry it from place to place. It works well on table tops, cabinet tops, tops of wastebaskets. I guess I didn't need those legs anyway. Thanks for posting the tute! froggyintexas
