Default Kaye Wood tute on stitch in the ditch method.

I found this interesting. She mentions there are two types of this method, stitch- in -the -ditch and quilt- in -the -ditch. I understand the latter since I've done that on many quilts but why would you stitch in the ditch before the backing and batting are added?

The only thing I can think of is that the quilting process does put stress on the quilt top. If you add the stitching before sandwiching & quilting, you reinforce the seams. Might be a good idea if you used a very loose weave.
