JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - An Iraq War Veteran now has her handmade, American flag quilt hanging in the Mississippi's Secretary of State's office. Melissa Allred, from Bogue Chitto, gifted the flag quilt to the Secretary of State in honor of Veterans Day and as part of her Veterans Flag Quilt Challenge.
“This quilt will be the first thing Mississippians see when they walk through our Agency's doorway,” said Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “We hope the quilt will remind visitors of our agency of the sacrifice and dedication of our military,” he added.
Allred said she began the quilt challenge to do just that, honor veterans."I hope that everyone who sees it will accept my challenge and do something to help support our U.S. veterans. To have the opportunity to spread the word about my Veterans Flag Quilt Challenge to a wider audience is astounding. It is my hope that this will help raise awareness and support for United States veterans of all ages, services, and conflicts," said Allred.
The program has now spread worldwide. Allred gives the quilt pattern free of charge. "Not only is it an honor as the quilt maker, it is an honor as a veteran to be able to have my quilt prominently displayed to show everyone who sees it what it stands for, supporting my fellow veterans," said Allred.
Allred served with the 1-155 Brigade of the Mississippi Army National Guard from 2009-2010.
