Raw edge is the only way I applique for kids quilts. My grandson has several that has held up just fine and they have been washed a lot. Also most all Kansas Troubles quilts have raw edges. http://www.ktquilts.com/
I've made many of the Five and Dime quilts with raw edges. No problem at all. The edges fray softly but don't look like rag quilt edges. If your seams hold together in quilt then the raw edge will too, same thing. I leave about 1/4" and use short stitch length. I have left 1/8" but that's too tedious to keep even stitching for me.

I personally will not do any raw edge applique, I just don't like the look of it. And I always wonder what will happen in the future with washing.

I've used raw edge appliques in many quilts and they seem to have held up well. I've even seen the grandmother's fan done with fancy embroidery stitches on Sew Very Easy, beautiful quilt.

Make a simple pot holder with raw edge applique and wash it a dozen or more times and see how it fares.
