40 minute scrap quilt tutorial ...

Just found this on Youtube and thought wow this IS a great way to use up scraps instead of resorting to buying jelly rolls ... I think the technique might be similar to the jelly roll quilt race

I had an idea while I was watching that. I cut width of fabric binding strips at 2.5 and I just toss the scraps in the scrap bins. I think some time when I have time I'll dig thru and sort out all the binding scraps and use them to make a quilt like this.

Had to watch in 'silent' mode here at work, but loved the video. That fabric is far too delicious to be considered "scrap!" LOL

I made my daughter a denim scrap quilt like this for Christmas this past year, and backed it with a blue and white stripped fab. and used multi colored Emb. thread to tie the quilt - way to heavy to try and do any quilting on it. I just cut 2 1/2" strips and put them together at the 45 degree angle and sewed them in the same fashion. I had already made two jelly roll tops, and since DD wanted a denim quilt and time was squeesing in on me, decided to use this method. Worked fine and looked pretty good I thought. A denim quilt is heavy enough to make a warm quilt in colder country, and she lives in the Mountain area of Tx., doesn't really get extremely cold and stay for an extended time, but does get cold out here.

I loved watching this video and the way she interacts with the music. I am going to try this method. Thanks for sharing the link.

Great web site, just like the 1600 quit.

I was interested to see she used the equivilent of 30 strips as the original jelly roll race calls for 40, but it seems her dimensions worked out just fine. I've done something similar but cut mine 3" as I was using whole width fabric. It was a bit dicey to get the right length but I was happy with the result using all B/W fabrics. I want to try this as a truly scrappy as I have a lot of short pieces 1/8-1/4th yard I don't really care for. I thought of using a blender/solid that would help tie the colours in every three of four strips. Hmm. Maybe this will be my next project.

I enjoyed this video. I would like to see one of these in reds, whites and blues. May have to put it on the someday list.

That was fun to watch. I saw this method before & tried it using some scraps I had picked up at a yard sale. They were all close to 6" in width & different lengths, but not long. I stacked bunches together, cut same width, left length & sewed end to end. It was quick & not to bad for those odd scraps

That was fun to watch. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing. I have a friend who really wants to make quilts but is intimidated. I do believe the next time our group gets together she will be finishing off a quilt!!!!

Super way to use up the left overs (scraps).

matraina 02-03-2013 09:04 AM

Thanks for the link. Hope I can do one myself some day.

thank you, thank you, thank you. I just finished a scrappy quilt top this weekend that took so much cutting and hours of sewing. I am definitely going to do this one. What a great and EASY way to use up my scraps. Enjoyed this so much.

I will definitely try it with scraps. Have made one with a jelly roll and loved how fast it goes together. Thanks for the link.

I have done longarm quilting on several of these quilts (done by a charity group at the Oregon Coast) and wonder if they made them this way - I bet they did. Now, I want to get my stash out - maybe just one color (you know, the container that you can no longer get the lid on and you need to make something out of the fabric) and make one or two ... thank you for posting the video.
