Border Creek Station Mystery Quilt - Quilter's Celebration
 

It's that time of year, time to begin Border Creek Station's mystery quilt. This years is a celebration year as this is the 10th mystery quilt.

If anyone else is interested in joining, please check out Border Creek Station's website ( http://www.bordercreekstation.com/mysteryquilt.html ). There is a list of stores across Canada and the U.S. that are participating, including our local quilt shop Bear's Paw Quilts in Whitehorse, YT!

Our local shop meets once a month (second saturday) to discuss the quilt in progress and pick up our next clues.

We just received our first clue this weekend, so the cutting begins!

I had previously picked out the fabrics I wanted to use. However, after our first meeting, I realized that my line up was a bit too busy. I had a lot of feature fabrics. So I decided to shop a little more and move my line up around a bit and I came out with a much calmer quilt, still in the same colour scheme I wanted.

Here are my fabrics...I'm sharing the first line up I made so you can see the difference.

Your fabrics are absolutely gorgeous. No matter what the end pattern, you're going to have one beautiful quilt.

Oh thank you...the shades of brown is an absolute favourite of mine so I'm glad I got to use a colour scheme I'm happy with.

This was my last fabric selection but I might need more advice. Yours are all in the same color range and mine are not so that might be a problem. I'm still not sure about the purple fabric.

I'm doing this one, too. Here are my fabrics. Sherri was at my local quilt store while I was shopping, and gave her blessing on the choices :) She did suggest my fabric 7 (green) might be too much, so I bought enough of #1 on her suggestion, to use for inner border if I decide it needs to be calmer.
I understand that 1,2,3 are all background colours. 6 is your "pop" of colour. 7 is an inner border

My biggest issue with mysteries is picking colours - so I told the shop owner I'd only participate if she helped me pick. Here's hoping I like the end result - so far, the first piecing is feeling a little dull in my colour choices (but I did tell her I wanted fall colours).

I just noticed - some are a month behind :( I got step number 2 last weekend but the original poster just received #1, so I will try to avoid posting any pics for fear of spoiling the mystery for others.

Krista, I think your line up is great, very different from mine and we are both thinking "fall", I like your shot of blue, my shot will be the orange.

Anael, I'll take a peek at my hints regarding colour choices to see if your line up works. You did say though that something didn't feel right, I find when I feel that way that something does need to be changed, even if it's only one fabric or just changing the order of my lineup. I was feeling my original was a little busy..you'll notice in mine I picked a plainer fabric for my fabric one and moved what was my fabric 1 to become fabric 2...it made such a difference...and I made my 4 and 5 more similar.

I wish we lived closer, we could go through your stash and have a little fun.

2 purples and 2 greens blend in a bit, I would add some orange/pumpkin - just my thoughts

Hi Anael, I've been looking at your line up...I think what we need to look at are fabrics 4, 5 and 8.

In the Border Creek line up ( http://www.bordercreekstation.com/mysteryquilt.html ) these 3 are looking very similar, with just a bit of difference. In that muted green look. If you look at mine they are all browns. Mine are small patterned in browns with 8 being darker. If you look at Krista's they are very similar as well. Her three have a bit of a colour variation but the patterning is similar.

Your three go together but are not similar. #4 is a brown with a large busy pattern in purples. Your #5 is brown with a less busy patterning and not much colour variation, and then your #8 is dark purple. They go together on their own and would make a great quilt but I think what is making you rethink is that the 3 are too different.

Does that make sense?

The hints say that 4 and 5 can be the same fabric if you like, which cuts down the stress of choosing...and 8 is just a bit stronger. These 3 fabrics make the quilt the colour it will be...so if you are looking at a purple quilt...you can leave 8 and change out 4 and 5 to something similar, with a bit of a print, just a bit lighter.

Yes it makes sense. It would be so nice to pick fabric with a quilting friend but I guess the trip is a bit too expensive just to do that :D I now understand what makes the main colour of the quilt!
I will go through my stash again tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I might have to do some shopping as I mostly have 1 yard pieces and that's not enough.

Not free (at least not at my shop), but if you don't want the fabric kit, the cost was only $25 for the whole series.

No, it's a mystery quilt from Border Creek Station, there is a $25 charge and you can purchase a kit of the fabrics they used for their quilt or you can pick your own fabrics based on their instructions on how to pick your fabrics. If you go to their website, I put the link in my first post, you can find a list of quilt shops that are hosting the mystery quilt.

How big is this quilt going to be?

Your choice - lap or queen. She's giving instructions for both.

I am envious, your Quilt Shops seem to have a lot going on and often, would love to do a Mystery. I'm in Oz and your shops are sooo far away from me. I'm rural and not that close to a quilt shop ,any mystery they have you have to do
in a shop class and they are not cheap.

To those that have shown their material I love them all. Happy sewing cann't wait to see them finished.

Hi everyone!!!!

I received my clue #2 yesterday. I may not be able to work on it till the Christmas holidays though. I put that Triangulations disk she mentions on my wish list at the Quilt shop. Everyone who has been using it has nothing to but good things to say about it, apparently it makes making those half square triangles much more accurate.

How are you all doing?

I'll be working on step 3 this week, as soon as I finish quilting my final Christmas gift. And after I figure out where I put the instructions when I brought them home last weekend.

How's everyone doing on their mystery quilt? I just finished up step 4, and have all my bits and pieces tucked away in their little baggies. Well, all done except trimming those 56 half-square triangles. That's tomorrow's task.

Oh I like your colours!!!!

I'm not keeping up, I got distracted (so bad!!!) but I'm hoping to be caught up at the end of the month. I'm dog sitting/house sitting for friends at the end of the month so I'll have an entire weekend of sewing...sort of like a mini-retreat.

I got the triangulations cd for Christmas so I'm anxious to try it out.
