Thank you for sharing, my friend was looking for a inexpensive sewing machine. She will be thrilled.

I bought this one back in June and I would advise against it. It is light weight and broke down within 60 days and I had to take it to a shop to get it repaired because it is all sealed. I was so very disappointed in this machine so I would vote no unless you are looking for a light weight machine you want just for fancy stitches on lightweight fabric. I ended up buying a Janome HD-3000 and love it. A little more money but well worth it.

I bought a Brother CS6000i 4 years ago from Walmart for $180. delivered to my door. It is a lightweight machine as stated in the spec. I used it to make 50+ DENIM quilts for our wounded warriors through Operation Quiet Comfort. The needle began to hit metal after this extensive use. I thought I broke it. My local sewing machine repair man refused to even touch it. Found a Brother Dealer/Service Center and took it to them. Their "Tune Up" cost was $119. plus parts. When I declined to have them service it, they tried to sell me another machine. I decline that, too.

I bought another CS6000i because I like the machine. I also make crazy quilts and like all those stitches. Works on costume sewing, too.
When a friend took her Singer to be serviced, I asked if he would look at "my cheap Brother machine". His reply was: Estimates are free. $69. later, my machine is back in service! That is his basic Service Fee. Since then, I have sewn maybe 30 more denim quilts and bound/quilted 8 twin size bed quilts for our local VA hospital on it.

I lent one of my CS6000i to a friend who just could not get used to how light it was. (She went back to her old machine, sewed more slowly on hers and stopped breaking needles. She has now made 10 denim quilt tops for the program. )

Drawbacks: if you get birdsnests under the fabric, stop, rethread and start over. This happens and was the #1 complaint on the feedback form I read on line.

Be sure to clean out the lint and any stray thread pieces or dirt/dust that accumulates inside the machine. It is easy to take apart. There is mostly empty space inside! I use a computer vacuum attachment to get into the nooks and crannies, pulling out the stuff. I do not used canned air. Do not oil this machine. It is plastic and oil only attracts the dirt.

In short: sew slowly and keep the macine clean. Re-thread when you have a problem.

PS- Amazon had the List Price as $600. No way! But I like the machine. Both machines are working great, now: new and serviced one.

The comment #4 has a lot of merit in it. It is very important to clean the lint and stuff out of the bobbin area and any other area one can reach into, and to change needles frequently.......along with not trying to race with the speed. Whether the machine is a "cheap" one or a very high end one, abuse will destroy it.........and knowing its limitations also aids in its working ability. Most of the time the reason for a break down is operator abuse/misuse.

As an aside....why do all machines cheap and expensive offer so many styles of buttonholes...I guess since I do not any longer sew clothing, that seems like overkill. When I did garment sew-and that was for personal use only-I recall only using one or two different kinds of buttonholes....actually the same one only different sizes......all those buttonhole stitches always amaze me on the sewing machines...that is not what I look for when purchasing one........

I got mine at Walmart last year, for about $160; they have it now for the $134 price. So far so good! All of my machines before that were vintage and I loved them but I wanted a blanket stitch to do applique. This has several versions of it. I've been pleased because there have been a number of positive reviews of this machine on the QB. I was surprised how light it is but that's a plus. I love the needle down feature and that I can use either a foot control or the button on the machine.

I've been using this machine for 6 years. I've never had a problem with it. I don't sew as much as some of you, so it may eventually wear out, but it's a great inexpensive machine, easy to use, with some nice options on the stitches. It is lightweight but easy to take with you if you are traveling. Biggest drawback is the small throat space. I've used my older Kenmore for quilting and am now starting to use vintage Singers, but for doing the piecing or using decorative stitches, this one is a bargain.

After reading such great reviews of this machine, I've wished I had one. But I have my big and little Janomes and a Featherweight. No real need, just want one. Could I ship to one of you ladies and pick it up later? DH would not understand. lol
