I do not have time to read this at the moment, but plan on it. One time when I was in a fabric store I asked the lady if a particular piece was cotton, she was not sure. I said I would try a burn test on it when I was home. It was reasonable, the ashes I had left were soft what there was of them, so I figured cotton. When I have burnt polyester it the ash is hard and it gave off black smoke. Not sure if I was right, but thought I was. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for this information. I have acquired a huge stash from a friend whose mother had to go into a nursing home for Alzheimers. I know from the labels that some of the fabrics are silk, some wool, some cotton, but a bunch appear to be either poly or a blend. The burn test will help me to know what i am dealing with before I use any other fabrics.

Thank you for posting this. I've been doing this for many years, and never thought about using a candle and pie pan. That is so much easier than using a lighter. I also liked the idea of a portable burn kit.

I have been doing this for many years, also. Since I lost my Mother, I have an abundance of her fabrics. She did every type of sewing you can think of; from formals and suits to different crafts and quilting. You can imagine the variety of fabric and scraps she left for me! Actually, she told me that when she was gone, I should light a match and burn all her "junk". Of course, I could not part with any of it.
