Fee's for YouTube Video's please say it isn't the future trend!!!!
Maybe I just crawled out from under a rock and this isn't new, but I just checked out a Carol Doak video, it was a short clip on YouTube. In order to see the entire video there is a toggle for renting the video for 72 hours @ $4.99.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEOJQegt8HA The C&T publishing is having a sale on one of her popular books and the site then sends you to the YouTube video that you can rent???? I sure hope this isn't a trend with YouTube instructional video's. I so enjoy Missouri Star Quilt tutorials and numerous other videos that have taught me techniques along the way. I guess classes at popular websites that sell the classes for a one time fee with unlimited viewing are going to be real bargains. |
This is the first I've heard of renting youtube videos, however, there have always been very short videos that direct you to a web site to purchase the full version. Seems weird at first, but I've bought videos for a lot more than $5 on a specific technique. Watched them once then never looked at them again. Maybe a smaller $ amount on a rental would be good. HAve to think about this.

PaperPrincess~ I guess I'm a person who needs to review from time-to-time as I 'forget' from one quilt to another on certain techniques. For instance there is a super slick (to me at least) binding video that an online store has. I seem to always forget the last part and need to 'refresh' my memory, how she folds and tucks :0) It may just be me at my age that I need refreshers and for that reason I'm glad that, so far, I haven't had to pay every month or so when I need to refresh a technique in this brain of mine. It will be interesting to hear what other's think on this subject. |
Wow that could really add up! My Craftsy classes are even more appreciated. I also have a subscription to the Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Timms which is a great bargain. Besides the great shows that I have learned so much about techniques, different types of quilting, and quilting world personalities, there are great classes and tutorials that are a part of the subscription. The last time I renewed I got an additional 6 months which made it an incredible bargain. I'm going to be focusing on things like this because you can go through a lot of money when you buy things piecemeal and it's easy to lose track of what you've paid for. That being said I have Carol Doak' s new Craftsy class on my wish list until I can purchase it. Love her!
|
That might be an upcoming thing....nothing is free anymore...so sad. I even notice mags are slowly coming down in price..."good deals abound" on many subscription offers.

Maybe it's just a Carol Doak thing. I sincerely doubt that Missouri Star Quilt Company will ever charge for their video tutorials
|
Google owns Youtube. There is talk of some type of overhaul for video streams, etc. But since Carol Doak and her kind are PUBLISHED authors and wish to profit from their expertise, expect Google to go along since Google also likes profits.
I'm not dissing these authors, they have a right to monetize. It's just an economic fact. Plus a charge and rent might deter the more innocent type of piracy. You download and give your friends a copy type of piracy that is. This is one reason I won't use videos. I'll buy the book. Then the info is at my disposal at any time. I don't have to get up and turn on a player or the computer. |
I hadn't heard anything about this, but I recently heard that they are trying to figure out how to charge us for sending emails...
|
As for MSC, if they are doing their own videos, and not posting anywhere but on their own site, that's their call. No one can make them charge if they don't want to. Craftsy seems to shoot a lot of theirs in a Denver Studio and host their own.
With the others that are being charged for - it might also be the publishing company that wants its cut. I've heard about some of this - I own a Google phone, bought from Google. So stuff like this will appear on Android newsletters and forums. |
Where on earth did you hear that? You are already paying for emails by paying for broadband.

Carol Doak has a lot of free patterns on her web site. If you are just learning how to paper piece she is the best. I took a class from her years ago and she was nice and patient and a great teacher.

I think that it is more likely that you are sent to Utube to sample the CD that comes with that particular book, to see if that is what you want to purchase. In order to save bandwidth, if you want to watch the whole thing, which is probably lengthy, then they want compensation for that time.
|
I sincerely hope this isn't the trend. I'm a visual learner and need someone to show me step by step instructions before it sinks into this challenged brain of mine. That's why I like MSQC's quilting videos...
|
Michelleoc, charging for emails has been proven to be a myth! That is not going to happen.
|
interesting for sure ..
|
If there is a charge I won't be watching them. If they don't sell they will have to go to plan B.
|
I have heard that they were going to start charging for watching all U tube videos, but haven't heard when, I guess this is the start of it.

There is also a considerable cost to producing the emails, you can see which ones are more professional than others. Facebook is now charging businesses to send updates to all the people who have liked their page. It costs money to produce videos, I think we have been lucky to have free access to so many for so long. It also costs a lot of money to host videos, stream videos etc. We often forget that as well as end users needing an internet connection, the video, needs to be uploaded to Youtube, stored there (storing and backing up data costs money), then there is the bandwidth to serve the video to you. I am not surprised that people are looking to recoup some of their expenses. |
Since Carol Doak is in the business of making money from her books and classes, I doubt there would be much incentive to let you watch a free video of her technique on YouTube - or anywhere else. I would think YouTube will still have free videos, but perhaps business people are wising up and not giving their source of income away for free.

This is a Carol Doak thing. Most retailers sell their goods at a 100% mark up. I know she makes at least a 500% mark up on her paper she sells for paper piecing. With that said, there is another issue that is a lot more important than the retailers charging for their wares, it is that the UN has made a move to gain control over the internet through the ITU International Telecommunications Union, which is part of the United Nations, which would bring in international governance of the internet.China, Russia and Saudi Arabia are strong supporters of the treaty. So far, the US has not signed the treaty. Then there is Google and their insidious way of getting information from the different apps and services they provide through the internet. I have not done an update on my phone due to Google's permission statement which says that if I update the Google related apps, I give them permission to access all information on my phone including photos, contacts...everything....just to upgrade programs that we used to pay for! It is always about control and money. I will get off my soap box now....we all should just stay informed and when we see our freedoms being infringed, contact your political representation.

I love to watch the videos - as said you learn so much more by actually seeing something done than trying to follow along in a book - - and it is so much more invigorating to try the item they are doing. One thing I love about Jenny on Missouri Quilt videos - she is so natural - and if something isn't perfect (like a seam turned over while pressing) she just keeps on going and finds solutions for other little mishaps along the way. I just love watching her.

Never heard of paying but this may be the wave of the future...Everything seems to go that way after it catches on...Hope not...
|
If I want something that cost money I pay for it. If I don't want something I won't pay for it. That applies for any internet content too. I'm not concerned either way about youtube.
|
I think it is up to the person who makes the video. I don't think Jenny will charge for hers. At least I hope not.
