How do you use quilting stensils?

Ninnie 03-22-2009 02:12 PM

after you finish your top and place all 3 layers together, you then quilt them all together, if you hand quilt, which I do. These are made of plastic and have slits in them so you can mark a desiqn on your top that you wish to quilt. Sometimes a pretty feather or flower or sometimes just grids. It is up to you how you want to finish your quilt. If you machine quilt you can also get stencils for that. Hopefully my order will come tomorrow and I will Post a Picture.I hope this wasn't too hard to understand. If you need more help just let me know :-) always glad to help!

I was wondering the same thing. Didn't quite grab the concept of using stencils, is that when you use that Pounce stuff? Can you tell I'm a beginner, lol?

Sondray, You can use "pounce" or anything else to mark your top as long as it will brush/wash off. I like to use the "blue" pen that washes out with a spritz of water. I always get chalk everywhere (and I do mean everywhere) so the pen is a better solution for me. Of course, it take longer to mark...

Ninnie 03-23-2009 03:31 PM

The stencils have slits in them where the lines go. you can mark with chalk but I am too messy with it also. I use a Fons and porter mechanical quilting pencil. It comes with dark led for light cloth and white lead for dark cloth. You can also use a pen that disappears shortly after marking. I like using them if I am marking as I quilt! hope this helped some, I will post pic when stencils come. You can also use a light box to mark quilt top. Just put a light under glass table top and place design on top of table, then lay quilt top on top and the design will shine through. You can use anything for a pattern. I have used plates for curve quilting and made shell design from spools or small glasses. Any where your imagination takes you is alright! :D Ninnie in NC

OK, girls her I go! stencils showed up about 8:00 last evening and I did a shouting happy dance! Glad there are no close neighbors here. Here are the pictures I promised One is just of the stencils and the other has a black square showing what it looks like after marking a stencil. The blue shows what it looks like after you quilt one. I am definitely NOT a teacher! heck, I've never even gotten to take a class! (no classes here in the boonies)  So to the quilting police, have mercy, all stitches are not created equal, no matter how hard I try. If any questions just pm me. I love to share the love of quilting! Ninnie in NC

I ordered last Wed evening and they came yesterday! top picture is all wrong. The blue didn't come out right. I'll try again

pittsburgpam 03-25-2009 09:24 AM

Thank you for posting the pics! I can't wait to get the ones I ordered and the prices were so good that I wasn't sure what they were going to look like.

I ordered the flower border like the one you have quilted with the two ribbons going through it. I also ordered the large corner motif with the flowers and ribbons and the love birds with the ribbon AND the double ribbon. I think I will use them all in my Giant Dahlia.

Hello everyone,

I have a question about using quilting stencils. I have never been serious about hand quilting, but have bought stencils thinking that one day I would take a stab at it.

How do I start with marking my piece? I have the chalk pouncers and promptly threw them away - can't stand them.

Do we put the stencil where we want it and draw the marks on with a special pen?

Please let me know what you all do because I'm at a total loss as to what to do. Thanks! Cathy Oh!

sunnyhope 03-25-2009 11:43 AM

i think it looks to difficult, i need something easyyyyyyyyyy

couldnt some one do a step by step, even showing me how to mark with stencil and the sewing, the stitches and such.

i need all the help i can get

Ninnie 03-25-2009 12:09 PM

Hi girls! In the top picture, on the black material I have marked a small stencil. It is marked with a fons and porter mechanical quilting pencil. I used the white lead on the black so you could see it. That is a 4' stencil on the black. The pencil also comes with dark lead for light fabric. In the bottom blue picture you can see what a stencil marking looks like after quilting. The small stencil marked on the black is laying on the table in the picture of stencils. I don't know if that helps or not.

CathyOh 03-25-2009 12:37 PM

LOL - I discovered that I have the Fons & Porter mechanical pencils already. I was using them for marking but didn't put 2n2 totether. I will try that! Thanks! Cathy Oh!

Ninnie 03-25-2009 01:05 PM

hay, Cathy I had to look for 20 min this morning to do the sample! Don't you just love it when the light bulb comes on! I finally remembered which drawer mine was in. Now go and m ark a stencil! Yea! :D :D :D

Ninnie 03-27-2009 05:47 AM

Hi girls, this is the last stencil it came yesterday. It is a white on white stencil but I probably will use a color thread to quilt it. It's name is geranium I'll try to post picture now.

sewjoyce 03-27-2009 05:50 AM

Darn -- my computer won't let me download the picture....

Ninnie,

Thought you might like to see a couple of stencils I got yesterday at my LQS :-)

pittsburgpam 03-27-2009 05:46 PM

Those are pretty! I still haven't received mine in the mail. :(

Ninnie 03-28-2009 02:44 AM

those are great sewjoyce, you can use that size anywhere and I like that. Hang in there pittsburg, I was anctious also. You can go on line and check to make sure they are in the mail., with your order # I have to get sewing now to finish a top to place in floor frame....1 Doesn't do any good to stencils if I don't have anything ready to quilt  I wonder how many orders they have gotten off of this board. I think they should pay for advertisement. Ninnie in NC

Ninnie 03-28-2009 12:17 PM

I forgot to tell you they also have stencils for machine quilting. Also table cloths and if hubby's do woodwork, They also have stencils for that! Also for tree skirts for Christmas trees. I might do a couple of these for Daughters-in-law for Christmas this year. Check them out! :-)

Ninnie 04-02-2009 04:30 AM

Thought I might move this back to the front page for a little while longer. Some who ordered haven't received their stencils yet or had a chance to post pictures Ninnie in NC
