Interesting concept, although I have to wonder, after you've quilted the middle part, and then have to sew back the batting to it's other half, wouldn't that be just as cumbersome?

I think the hardest part is trying to quilt the middle. I can see doing it to quilt the middle of the quilt.

You would only have the unquilted side to get into the throat area, the center would be off to the left.

I tried it and I love it. You don't have all that batting and material shoved under the arm. When I put the batting back on one end I sprayed the edges and butted them together and used the spray as usual. Worked like a charm! I did add a few extra pins to hold it but I do that anyway. I doubt I would use it on a quilt the size in the tute but big ones are great.
