I made one 3 1/2 and 6 1/2...the little placemat was the 3 1/2" template and 5" blocks, 5across and 5 down with 3" border...they are so much fun...

when I use my 6½" template I'm going to try 8" blocks with a 4" border, I want to try a full size quilt doing it this way. Should be pretty in scraps...

Just wondering linda, what will your templet measurement be on your six inch templet? This looks like fun and I want to try it too.

Thank you I would love to have any information you may have. The directions say to add a 3" border. Is that a finished 3" or a cut strip of 3"?

How do you determine where to mark your block (as with the 3 1/2" template) when you make the block larger?

Also, I learned something (as usual the hard way). I washed my 5" charm pack and then put them in the dryer in a lingerie bag. They shrunk just enough to NOT be 5" anymore. I think I should have let them dry on their own.

this gives exact measurements to mark your ruler or template plastic....its exactly what mine measures...you can figure out how do do a 6½" template too, just add 2" to your markings on all sides....clear as mud but that what I did...

Yes, a friend of mine had her husband cut a whole lot of them for a group of us to learn last year before the "commercial" ones were available but after that different gals had any hardware store cut them. The small one is 3 1/2 inches with the measurement 1 inch in from the corners and draw the diagonal line with a sharpie marker. very easy. the larger one for the layer cake (10") square is 8 1/2" I believe. I just can't put my hands on my larger one now. I think you might be able to go 8 3/4 or 9" but try a couple first. A bit larger template would just leave less waste. Definitely very easy to make your own!
