If you can measure carefully, you can use double sided scotch tape and tape a stick of gum down on your machine at whatever seam allowance you want. This is how I taught my 4H girls to sew a straight seam.

I just measure and use painter's tape. Easy to put on, easy to take off, not expensive, keep it in my sewing drawer, it is right there when I need it and it is big enough to grab it without looking!!!!! More people think of more things to buy and use, when, with a little bit of female ingenuity and brains that the Good Lord gave us, we can do anything for practically nothing!!!!!! Besides, I think it is a lot more fun to figure this stuff out for myself. Holy cats, painter's tape, orange stick, tweezers - I haven't paid anything for any of that stuff (well, we had the painter's tape from before - now that we are done painting, it's mine!!!!!!) RAChhap - thanks I love your idea. I'll have to try it cause I have a hard time sewing straight lines. After all these years, that's still my biggest challenge!! A quilt teacher taught me to use the lines on an index card because they're 1/4". She said sewing on the line was a 1/4" and sewing just to the right of the line was a scant 1/4". I tried it and measured and sure enough she was right. But my problem was sewing a straight line so the whole seam was consistent. Stick of gum here I come!
I have finally found the solution that works for me. First, use the correct foot for your machine. I was using the "A" foot instead of the 1/4" foot I had purchased and misplaced! Then I cut a piece of mole skin about an inch wide and 1-1/2 inches long and put it right up against the 1/4" foot. I can finally sew a consistent seam!
Edie, me too, me too! I keep a roll of painters tape handy for seam allowances and for marking straight lines on a quilt perfectly spaced, leaves no residue...can also roll it up and use the sticky side to pick up all those loose threads from ripping out seams...love it!

Has anyone tried the "guidelines" ruler offered on the same website? It looks like it might work well for cutting small scraps.
Let us know how you like it as there are many of us who struggle to get that perfect 1/4 inch seam allowance.

I have one of these tools somewhere, still in the package. I think someone gave it to me, but I have never tried it.
