Walmart discontinuing 75% of their fabric-On Clearance

Just thought I would let everyone know while I was at Walmart I noticed a BIG table with alot of bolts on clearance. When I asked the associate if they were getting a new line I was told no. They are cutting the dept down to just cotton basics and sewing supplies. Basically going from 2 1/2 aisles down to one in my local stores. Over the last 2 weeks they have marked down most patterned fabrics to 1.50 to 3.00 per yard. This is company wide. If your Walmart has fabric and you haven't shopped there lately you might want to check it out. They are also still getting new fabrics in until the warehouse is empty and they are coming in at the clearance pricing.

Another one bites the dust. I will certainly miss them as most of my quilting these days is for Linus. I can't afford to spend $14 a yard on fabric that I will be giving away after putting several hours of my time into constructing a quilt. I can only hope they change their minds.

I think their problem with fabric is that it's a department that almost has to have a dedicated worker to cut fabric and keep things stocked and straight...and they just don't have those anymore. Almost all Wal-Mart employees are now all-store-trained so that they "float" around the store, working everywhere. Any time I buy fabric in Wal-Mart now, I'm tempted to cut it myself. I'm also sometimes tempted to tidy their fabric shelves because they are always a mess.

As limited and limp along as it is, I hope they don't remove fabric from our stores (they did remove the large fabric department with dedicated clerks from one store years ago and then brought it back, greatly reduced in size).

I was just in the one in Lapeer last week. They have only ever had one aisle of fabric, and just had a few bolts on sale so maybe it's just some stores? I'll have to stop tomorrow & check again.

My Walmart took out fabric several years ago and never brought back even a single bolt or package of batting.

In the Thumb of MI, I do not even bother to look for fabric anymore. Do not need supplies, so don't go into the craft department to see what hard supplies are available.

Our Walmart took out fabric and most crafts several years ago. It was our only option and folks called, wrote letters to the newspaper and the company. They are now making it into a superstore and adding fabric back. They have been swamped and the selection has been quite good. I talked with the manager recently and she said it is doing really well and other stores are adding back fabric because so many people complained.

Well, a short time ago we complained that Wal-mart took out the sewing center, then we wrote, called and sent e-mails to have it brought back in. I do shop the Wal-mart fabric department and most of the time I am the only one there and have to look up a clerk to cut for me. From the ridiculous to the sublime and back again. If we don't support them we loose them.
