Is this $40 Singer a great deal?

I found a craigslist posting today for this singer sewing machine. after talking to the seller, the machine passed from her grandmother to her mother to her. neither the mother nor the seller sews so they are selling the machine. they couldn't find the foot pedal that goes with the machine so does not know if it sews or not but it looks to be in great condition.
the seller mentioned that i could probably purchase a foot pedal for it. i am not sure what that would cost or if i could find one. i am more interested in purchasing it since it is a "family" heirloom instead of a random estate purchase.
do you think this is a good price for the machine? are foot pedals hard to come by for this type machine? the seller did mentioned that there was new wiring on on the machine. what are your thoughts, should i purchase it?
i also saw another one like this listed on craigslist for $75.00 which was an estate purchase.

It looks like a good deal to me! If you can get the model number, check eBay to see what a new foot pedal would cost. The new wiring is a plus, and the case appears to b in excellent condition. If the machine is a 99, I can tell you that I love mine.

It looks like that particular model uses a knee lever, not a foot pedal. See the little hole in the lower right hand corner of the case? That's where the knee lever is inserted in order to run the machine. There should be a knee lever stored inside the upper part of the case.
For me $40 is a little pricey for this machine (assuming it has the knee lever). I got one very similar (including the knee lever) for $25 at a yard sale. However, this one is in a little better cosmetic condition than mine.
I would not pay $40 if it doesn't have a foot pedal or knee lever. Expect to pay $35 or more for a foot pedal or knee lever.

Jump,jump,jump on the $40 one! I'd pass on the $75 one, you can do better on that price.
With that said, I do believe, like most things, that your area of the country determines the price/worth of things. In my area, old singers are very plenitful and if you watch cl for a while you will get a good feel for the price of them in your area.
