I finally got it the measurements I wanted it. I have the squares at 6 7/8" square, and cut diagonally. Then the 3 strips are a width of 3 3/8" each, that will make it so that the big square when all pieces are sewn together will be 12 1/2" and when it is a finished square in the quilt it will be 12".

Why not try to draft it out and paper piece it? I think it would be easy to draft..and then no fussy little cuts.

I have clear plastic grid sheets from Joann's I make templates out of with my exact measurements and then I save them so it goes pretty fast actually.

Make sure that your printer is set to print out the template at 100 percent and not to fit the page. Be aware that if you try to photo copy the sizes will alway be off a tad as the pints always scale more on one direction than the other.

On mywebquilter.com you can find the pattern and enter the size of the finished block. This will give you the pattern and the amount you need. I love this site.

Use 3-1/4" strips. Your strip sets will be 9" wide and cut into 9" sections, which will give you an 8-1/2" finished center. That, with two 7" squares, cut in half diagonally, will give you a 12" finished block. Make a sample block out of scraps to check it out.
