Default 2 1/2" strips cut, now what

o.k. so you all told me to cut scraps to 2 1/2". done. but now what.
I don't have anything close to an even amount of lights and darks
for a log cabin. (thought i'd do that). some of my ppcs are as short as 3"
some the full width, but those are few and far between. so what i'm
saying is, these pcs. are all sizes in length. any suggestions for
this mish mosh of pcs. thanks. and if you have pics. that helps too.

May be you could make a jellyroll race top? The strips would all be different lengths, but I don't think that would be a problem?

You would need a lot of scraps though LOL

For the 3 Dudes block to to Missouri Quilt Co and type in 3 Dudes quilt block. Jenny has a video tutorial on it. It's just basically strips cut into blocks. Blocks placed face to face with one set of strips vertically and the other strip horizontally. Sew all the way around the two blocks with 1/4" seam and then cut the sewn block into twice. Ending up with 4 pieces. Really clever idea and cute way to use up scrap strips or even cutting them to use from bigger pieces of fabric.

I would piece the shorter pieces together. This can be a very effective technique for log cabin quilts and other scrappy type quilts. Old-time quilters often pieced small pieces together to get a piece big enough to use.

I just made a string pieced quilt out of scraps, and it turned out beautiful! I took 10" square pieces of muslin and foundation pieced the strips onto the foundation. That gives it stability because you're going to be piecing with all kinds of bias, and you won't be able to remember if you cut the strip on the cross grain, straight grain or bias. When done with my blocks, I trimmed them to exactly 10", and started piecing them together. There was a bit of moving blocks around to get a better color distribution, but not a lot. I put a relatively plain print border on it -- mostly for color and because it "popped" a lot of colors in the quilt; it was a dark rose-pink with just a bit of geometric patterning. I thought I would have trouble quilting it because of the extra layer of muslin (plus top, batting and backing) but I had no trouble at all. I used rounded motifs in the quilting and a color that "stood out" for the quilting, to counter all the square blocks. I gave it to my niece for a graduation present, and now it's her "favorite thing", as she tells me. Oh, and the binding was scrappy - so easy to sew together 2 1/2" strips together to make a binding. I was so pleased with the results! I don't have a photo, but you could just google "string quilts" for lots of ideas.

You could use your longer strips to make 4 patch or 9 patch blocks and alternate them with a solid block and use the shorter strips to cut out applique in the solid blocks maybe scrappy flower petals ?

thanks all of you for the great ideas and for showing your fabulous quilts. I went to look at my strips and am feeling more confident about doing something with them. I did chicken out, don't want to get involved with something and change my mind, so I made fabric out of strings 1/4" to 2" in width. will make star blocks to my other star blocks for a scrappy quilt. maybe will be a donation quilt till I get the hang of this scrappy thing. thanks again

Just ordered two jelly rolls, one white and one off white. Figured they would work well with all the printed jelly rolls.
Don't have a pattern yet that I want to use.
