Fons & Porter has a quilt pattern, I think it is called "cottage quilt" or something like that. I am pretty sure it uses 2 1/2" squares in the sashing.

You could make something as basic as 4 patches or 9 patches, and then creatively put them together.

I saw a neat one just the other day....basically what I would call a backwards 9 patch...that is the main squares are plain and then the sashings are patchwork. It was gorgeous!
