72 Shades of Black!?!

72 Shades of Black!?!
No, not another book in 'that' series My sister and I were going thru the broadcloth at our local Lens Mill and I was looking for a black, a very dark purple and very dark green. The place was a bit of a mess and I started putting some of the blacks together, looking for the bolt that had the least on it (They give you 15% off for finishing the bolt). I was dumbfounded when my sister asked which shade I wanted, pointing out the now obvious differences in the shades of black in the pile I had created.
So, next time you buy black broadcloth, make sure you get enough for your whole project. The next piece you pick up might not have the exact same hue. 72 shades of black. Who knew!

Have run into this myself. Bought some glorious black fabric with gold outlined peacocks. For my dream project. Brought it home and laid it next to the focus fabric, and it looked as dull as could be. The black in the focus fabric was so much richer, darker, and "blacker". So now I take the fabric with me and it is amazing how many different shades are out there. And I agree, it is the same with many dark colors. Who knew there were so many reds??

Black is one of the hardest colors to dye, so I'm not surprised at all that yours varied so much. I buy my solid black by the bolt, just so I'm sure. Remember that the color, with broadcloth especially, can look slightly different depending on whether you're looking at lengthwise or crosswise grain. The light is reflected off the weave differently and sometimes it's quite noticeable.

I can hardly believe I have gone through an entire bolt of kona black (regular). I just ordered another bolt of the same and I have no worries about dye lots, I think it will be fine.
