I have been using an Accuquilt and really like how fast and precise the cuts are, but I completely "used up" a cutting mat in cutting 1 1/2 baby quilts made out of flannel. I cut 4 layers at a time and the last cuts I made were not very good because the mat was worn out. Is everyone else going through mats that quickly?

I'm still using the original mats from when I bought the Go about three years ago. I think like anything else the new mats aren't made as durable as the first ones made. Manufactures figure out how to save money by sub or making minor changes to the product. I've noticed the new mats others have seem to wear out a lot faster then my old ones. Just my opinion.

I totally agree with you on this. It was a little shocking to see the deep cuts into the mat. I was also annoyed that you really do have to get different mats. The wide dies need the same size mats. The skinnier dies need matching mats. I kind of think that when you buy a new die the mat should come with it.
Anybody getting a Go might find the information useful. The cost of replacement mats should be figured into the cost of using the Go.

The mats are not that expensive. I have stocked up when I find a sale and so far haven't even opened the packages. I use two sizes for all dies except the strip cutter, it's the biggest one I have. And if you find it on sale, cut it into the sizes you need. The mat only has to fit over the blades not the whole die.

Are you using a rag die? I have found that they will eat a mat quickly. Also, are you flipping the mat over each time? FWIW, I wasted money on the rag die because it is a pain to use. I have been using the large mat with the strip dies a lot lately and it seems to be holding up better that the 10x10 mat. GL!

No, I'm not using the rag die and I wouldn't. I've heard it makes a real mess with all the threads getting stuck in it. I have enough annoying things in my life without that.

I use the rag die a lot. I put a layer of thin paper, I use lightweight vellum, over the die before the fabric. It keeps the strings out of the die. Works great. Someone said it would dull the blades. So, I'll buy another one. I've cut hundreds of rag squares and no dullness yet.

I'm with you bella- they are not that expensive.. I have multiple mats -usually have 2-3 of each of the mats on hand, with the exception of the 5x10 ones.. .. .. Just need to know when you need to switch the mat for another and use the old mat for another die before it becomes useless.. Ie- my 10x10 that I used to cut 6.5 now is being used for any of the 5x10 dies.. Same with the 6x12 mats, Ill save them for the 5x10 dies as well.. ..

I just got my Accuquilt in the mail yesterday and thought I needed to purchase a 5 x 10, prior to using the cutter for some of the dies, but I can use the 6 x 12 for those... at least for now?

As long as the mat covers the die blades you can use it. I read that others are using old rotary cutting mats cut to fit the dies for mats. I haven't tried that. Makes sense that those would work.
