Default adding multiple borders question

I have a large quilt top that I'm adding a 3" border to and then a 6" border. Do you add each border at a time to the large top or can you sew the 3" and 6" border together and then add that one 9" border to the large top?

You can sew them together and add to the top at one time.

I've never thought of doing it that way. Let us know if it works okay.

I have never sewn the borders together first, then added them as one to the quilt top. It's just my opinion, but I think I would have better luck at not getting wavy borders if I sew them on one at a time.

Someone else had told me that & on my next quilt I am going to try it. Don't know why it wouldn't work.

I would join the two borders together first. That way if you mitre the corners both borders will match perfectly.

I just find it easier to do them separately, just me. Try and see how you like it.

For me, they stay straighter when I do the borders together and THEN put them on the quilt all at the same time. I do the sides first, then the top and the bottom. I haven't been brave enough to mitre them yet but I will.....someday! Good luck. Find YOUR groove and stick with it!

If you're doing mitered corners it can work to sew them together first. If you're not doing mitered corners it looks odd to sew them together first.
