Someone mentioned in another thread that to fussy cut blocks it works well to cut a "frame" from cardboard with the size block you want. Then you can place it around on the fabric and really see what you can get.

I read somewhere that you needed to cut the center out of the cardboard template 1/4" seam allowance, then you can see exactly what will be left when you put the seams allowances around it ... is that part of the viewing system? Or did I just make it more difficult? Cereal boxes are a good weight cardboard and cutting that center out with that nifty craft knife (can't remember what it is called :oops: ) should make quick work of it!
