I am cutting out some BQ 2 quilts for my grandsons. I'm using college fabric for the main blocks, and it's directional. Should I make sure all the blocks are going the same direction, make them all the same, and half will be upside down? The advantage would be that the quilt would not have a right side up, one way only orientation, (helpful for a 10 year old...). The disadvantage of course, half are upside down. My husband is having a fit with this first one because it's HIS alma mater and he feels they should NOT be upside down. What would you do? Thanks!!

is it a square for the main block or is it off square, because if it is perfectly square you shouldn't have to have it upside down, or are you talking about the the fabric that is not the focal point

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. The main block consists of your main fabric which is 9 1/2 inches square. It's bordered by some other fabrics. The main fabric is directional, it's for the University of Utah. So the pictures on the fabric are upside down in some blocks, due to the way the pattern has you lay out the blocks. It wouldn't be that much work to cut them out the other way, I may just do that so they are all going in one direction.

do not turn them different ways....some folks really can not stand the jumbled up look..make them all go the same..safer that way!

I'm with hubby. If I could make them all right side up, I would.

couldn't you just rotate the main block within the block design to suit your needs. Hope this makes sense. In each block the main block would be sewn differently dependent on where the block was going to be placed in the quilt design

Thanks for your input. I'm going to cut and orient the blocks to all go the same direction! You helped me decide.

if you use directional prints, you must watch how you put each block together depending on where they fall in the quilt. i did one in oriental prints and had to do that. not too hard to do though, so go for it.

BQ 1,2 & 3 are all quilt patterns using big blocks. If you enter BQ in the search on this board you can see lots of great pictures. It really shows off larger prints or focus fabrics.
