I recently bought a stitch in the ditch foot for my Janome. It has a little, not sure how to describe it, but like a guide in the middle that you put right into the ditch and it sews perfectly. I wish I had found this years ago. If you Google it you'll see the product.

Using a busy backing fabric with matching bobbin thread hides wonky stitches. Machinger gloves help a lot. Don't think you have to go at the fastest speed of the machine---I found a medium speed works for me.

I agree w/ IrishgalfromNJ, Leah Day's site is wonderful. You can really learn a lot from her. I have.
