My mother-in-law has embroidered stamped cross stitch blocks and asked me to piece and quilt the qult for a benefit auction she wants to put it in in 2 weeks! The blocks are 18" square, and I'm wracking my brain to figure out how to put this quilt together. There are only 6 blocks, so I need to do something to make it bigger. And I'm in a time crunch so it will need to be simple. I thought about a modified Warm Wishes with a nine-patch as an alternate block. But the strips and blocks would need to be 6" to make it work. How will that look? Those are big pieces! Has anyone done this? I have done it with smaller blocks, but not an 18" block. Any ideas?

I think the idea you have may be the best bet. You could always mock it up using paper to see if you think you'll like it. If you don't have a design wall, hang up a piece of flannel or batting and lay her blocks up there - the quilt will tell you what it wants. I think mock up your plan on it first and see where that leads. You could pick up a pkg of kids construction paper at wal mart to do this.

Do a modified BQ pattern and it will look great. These patterns are meant for bigger blocks.

I`ve made some, but used more blocks and set them out with strips of cloth that goes with embroidery. Pick the size quilt you think you want and make a top boarder & bottom boarder to get the lenght...do the same for the width ,devided by 3 (3stripes) Remember to put 2 pieces going side ways too. These should all be the same width.

Wow, this one stumped me, but it doesn't take much to do that. I don't know what a modified warm wishes is. Is that in the pattern section? Guess I need to look for myself istead of asking you guys.

Can't think what a BQ is? Thanks for all your replies. We'll see what happens. I need to go for fabric tomorrow.

By modified warm wishes, I mean that the strips between blocks will be the same width instead of the middle strip being a little different than the other two.

I decided to do the warm wishes pattern. I don't know why I thought the strips needed to be so wide. I did them 2" and got the quilt pieced together today. I actually had fabric in my stash and didn't have to go shopping! That would have taken a chunk out of my day! So it appears that I will get the quilt done by the deadline. I will try to post a picture of the completed quilt. Thanks for y'all's input.
