Hello, Everyone!

Just got home from a trip to South America and wanted to give fair warning to anyone attempting the same trip.

I had prepared some applique for the ten airplanes we were scheduled to fly in thirteen days. The second time we went through Lima, Peru, they threw away my cute little polka dotted handle scissors. They were less than three inches, which complied with American flight restrictions, but in Lima, they allow absolutely no scissors and they ceremoniously throw them away, despite your begging and pleading. They will not allow to pay to have them shipped to you or put them in your checked baggage.

The irony is that it was the second time we went through the same security, so I guess it depends who is on that day.

So, to say I didn't complete any applique on this trip is an understatement.

They also threw away our toothpaste, sunscreen and hand sanitizer because it wasn't in a zip lock bag.

Hope any of you planning to travel in South America can benefit from our experience!

Often times it is just who you get doing the screening.

Like many people who have control of others they feel they are right, no recourse for the other side. Not fair, but thats the way it is, sorry to hear of all your problems.

I travel a lot internationally for work and I usually take needlepoint or cross stitch. For the plane, I take a daisy cutter and I've been to at least 10 different countries including Peru and Brazil, and never had a problem. http://www.amazon.com/Clover-Thread-.../dp/B001DEJM8I i have both sizes one for yarn and one for floss.

I take nail clippers instead of scissors. They haven't questioned them yet.

That is terrible that different security people can interpret the rules differently.
