i bought a sheet of art foam and cut it in 1"x2" rectangles, then used a sharpie to label them. I used my hole punch to put holes in them so I could pin them to fabric or to a design wall. I like them so well I made a second set to use alphabetically in quilts that have rows and columns. I even made a set for my partner in one of the exchanges here on the board. Since I had all of the supplies, the cost was nothing.

I am a big office supply junkie so I find lots of quilt related uses for things like binder clips, file folders and organizers. I have sets of binder clips that I have numbered 1-40. I can attach a numbered clip to the design wall with a map tack or pin through the handle part of the clip. Then I can use the same clip when removing blocks from the wall and keep the blocks in order. I also use different colored markers so can add an extra level of sorting if I need more than 40 for one project.
