I've done 6" blocks - make 4 for 12x12 block. Personally I like 12" blocks. Try: www.quilterscache.com She has hundres of blocks - all differnet sizes.

I think a block that size is attractive - especially on a sampler and with sashing in between. I personally like a block that finishes 6" so that all it's components are super easy to calculate - like this Charming Instant Block quilt.

All blocks are 6" finished, with 1" sashing in between, separated by rows of 5" charm squares. This quilt is from a class I taught at my guild meeting to make multiple blocks at the same time using Eleanor Burns and Billie Lauder's quick methods. A few strips, a few squares, a few stitches, and voila! Instant blocks, Instant success. We had 12 sewers, plus 12 people pinning and pressing. We sewed for 1-1/2 hours, and made 174 6-1/2" blocks to use for charity quilts. Patterns available :D

I don't think 7" is small, but I do think it's an odd size mathmatically, no pun intended. I would find it harder to calculate piecing and dimensions, etc. Prime numbers are not easy to work with. I usually make 4" or 6" blocks for functional quilts and have gone as small as 2" for a 36x48 wall quilt. The overall design is what determines the block size for me.

I've done lots of 2" blocks, but prefer 6" also for calculations.

Doowopddbop-
I want the pattern for the charming squares quilt on the photo.
Where do I purchase it?
Can I make it and sell the quilt?

Hi, thanks for your notes!

The pattern for the Charming Instant Blocks is my own. Pattern includes instructions for seven different Instant Block methods (use whichever blocks you like for the quilt top) plus instructions to make a 54 x 72" lap quilt, or 42 x 51-1/2" wall hanging. Send me a pm if you would like to order a pattern- I sell them for $5 which includes postage.

I've got one going on where the finished size it 8 1/2" it's it's a bit annoying because it looks bigger, but demands more blocks, I think I'd prefer smaller or bigger than the 8 1/2" maybe as mentioned before 6 would be a good size, because your brain expects to make more.
