I'm spending quite a lot of time practicing my free motion quilting, and practice pieces completely covered in stitching are piling up. They're not worth keeping for reference - most are just covered in random bits of stitching as I worked on getting the tension right, and they often use fabrics I didn't like very much. But the thrifty bit of me is reluctant to just throw them away. Has anyone found a use for them?

My granddaughter calls them "butt things." I have leather seats. I used to have black leather seats. Summer + black leather seats + shorts is not a comfortable combination so I grabbed two pieces of muslin and some batting and made a big square and put some binding on it. If your squares are too small for that you can probably layer a couple of them into potholders or trivets.

Sew two together and stuff them with whatever and donate them to the SPCA for pet beds.

Sew into quilts and donate to a homeless shelter. That is what my LQS does when they teach FMQ. If someone is cold, they won't care that the quilt is ugly.

You do know you can just put another piece of fabric on top of the ones already sewed and start over?

I was going to donate to the animal shelter until my daughter said there was no way to launder them there and someone would have to take them home to wash.

I keep mine and put the date on them so I can see my progress. Then when I have to many I use as dusting cloths, floor polishers. they work great in the swiffer, if I serge the edges they can be washed and reused. I stacked a few 12x12 together once and stuffed a pillow. I used some once in place of pellon in a tote by spraying basting spray on them. Lined the drawers in my sewing room that hold my thread, keeps my thread from sliding around.

Sew many great ideas here. I have making mine into mug rugs. Hubby asked me the other day how many mug rugs I think he needs...

I keep adding layers of muslin. When they're really stiff, you can use them as interfacing for tote bag liners/dividers/bases, coasters, etc.
