I have one of these and have never had a problem and I have used it a lot.
This is what I used. I have had mine forever. I can believe I've ruined it.

Okay everyone thanks for all your suggestions. I'll try these things today. With Easter and all I haven't had time to be in my quilt room.

Just remember if a multi-layered applique is heated too much it can't be used to fuse to the background fabric as the glue becomes brittle and won't stick well to the background. I've used an inexpensive teflon oven baking sheet BUT- overheated Teflon fumes are toxic to pet birds, and I imagine us as well so I use only enough Low heat to barely tack the applique layers together and do the final fusing to the background on a piece of foil. No other Teflon in my house as I have a parrot. BTW- Teflon is being phased out per the government in a year or 2 as it is found accumulated in body fat.
