I have made quite a few rag quilts using flannel--my questions is... can you make rag quilts using and cotton quilting material? What about denim? Thanks again for your help. Kathy

I know you can use cotton quilting material and I don't see why you couldn't use denim, too.

You can use Denim, and also the cotton wovens. They make beautiful rag quilts and fray so nicely. Some of the prettiest I have seen were made from 100% cotton wovens.

only batiks don't work well- they have a much tighter weave- other cottons work fine & denim is great for a raggy quilt.

And don't forget fleece, they made good rag quilts, and don't generate the debris in the rag that other fabrics do.

Are you talking about fleece (approx 60" wide and usually used by putting two pieces together with ends tied together in a knot for a blanket) or flannel (some people call it fleece)??? Just want to be clear. I think the first fleece described does not ravel. Isn't it polyester?

Just a side on denim It gets very heavy to wash. You might mix it with regular cotton squares. But good thing it really last a long time. I made a Dresden Plate quilt with plates made of denim. Hahaa It was so heavy I had to go to laundry mat to wash. Didn't want it to kill my washer though I always have a heavy duty washer.

Our group has made at least 15 denim rag quilts, denim on bottom and 2 cotton fabric layers on top. Wash in commercial washing machine, it will fray just fine. Buy or borrow the rag cutter scissors, better for your hands.
