applique help needed

applique help needed
I am very new to appliqué - as in first project new. How much of the stabilizer stays behind the satin stitch? I am using freezer paper which did not adhere as I made the first turn. Do I have to get the paper out from between the zigs and zags? Would I have been better to have used a pelon stabilizer? I would like to try applique my second letter (2nd of 15) but would like advice first. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Fun -- welcome to applique!
I've always used something like Steam a Seam with machine applique to keep it in place, and I don't use any stabilizer for hand applique. I don't know if freezer paper would adhere well enough on its own.

while freezer paper s fine for a pattern, you don't want to leave it behind in the next stage. There are lots of types of applique. For "prepared" applique, you iron the fabric up and over the pattern, so the seam allowances are in their final place. IMHO, it's too much like work. For raw edge machine applique, you definitely want one of the forms of iron on interfacing. You may, of course, do prepared applique with the sewing by machine. Check out tuts here and on Youtube. When I use freezer paper as a pattern for needleturn, I iron it to the right side, pulling it off as I go.
There are tons of books on applique as well. Your local library probably has one. for a beginner, the Rodale Press book, on applique is especially good.
I know people who use large address labels for patterns as they adhere better. Unfortunately, they may leave a residue if left in place for a long time.

Just tear away everything else...and be careful to tear away from the stitching, not up, or you may find you loosen the threads. I do it this way all the time, for years now and have never had any issues with it.
