My niece just start Butler university this fall. I'd like to make an appliqued quilt of the bulldog. Now I've done a little applique, but I would like to know from some of you who do it more often , what type of applique should I use? I want it last and be durable, we know how hard the youngens can be on things.

Probably out of fusible and secure the edges down with stitching of whatever type you'd like.

When I look at this I see 8 pieces that it can be broken down into. I'm assuming :) that you want a large center medallion. I would take it to say Staple and have it blown up the size you want first. These should be large pieces that should be easy to either machine or hand applique.

Now this is how I would do it, others may do it differently. I would use a water soluable fusing (I don't like stiffness) or a very thin fusible around the edges of the piece to be appliqued to put on the pieces of the dogs head on the blue circle. Since its for a college I probably would machine applique with a smaller to med size zig-zag or satin stitch to secure.

Sounds like a fun project!

I would try reverse applique. Keeping the white as the background, I would use heat and bond light, or light seam to seam to at tachthe blue on top. Trace the bulldog shape, cutting out the blue. It will be stuck and then do a fine ziz zag or close blanket stitch. I agree going to Staples or Kinkos and blow it up.

I would also suggest reverse applique and I rarely use fusible as it makes it so stiff unless its a wall hanging - do all mine needleturn

I would use Heat and Bond Lite to fuse it and then machine edge stitch around it with small close zigzag or blanket stitch.

This design would be perfect for a 2-fabric applique, and it's easier than other forms because you aren't dealing with lots of small pieces that you have to position just-so. You can see examples of patterns for sale with this technique here - http://prqc.com/2faq.htm - and examples of some that I made here - http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-144873-1.htm

It would be very easy to make your own 2FAQ design since you already have the bulldog, and it's in 2 colors. You can use either needleturn or raw edge.
