Newbie here. I have watched lots of tutorials to learn how to do a few little bits of applique, but I was wondering if you're supposed to change anything besides the stitch on your sewing machine...the holes in my fabric at the needle entry points are so big that if I hold it up the light shines through them. Maybe that is just a cheap fabric, but are you supposed to use a smaller needle or something? I am posting a pic of my work but it is hard to see the needle holes. I think my standard sewing machine needle is size 14.

I had mine do that the first time also and I was worried - but was told that - that is the way they are since the needle goes in and out of the hole several times  I did switch to a size 11 needle and it helped a bit - also play with some other stitches and see if they are close but don't do the back and forth into the same hole

By the way looks GREAT to me

I'm limited on machine applique experience but...changing to a sharp embroidery needle might help and yes, fabric can be a factor as well.

Thank you. Wow, you thought the same thing! I thought I might be perforating the fabric to the point that the shape would pop out when I was done. =) Maybe I will try the zig zag next time if it doesn't go back into the same holes again and again.

Looks great! But try an embroidery or other sharp needle in a 70/10 or 80/12.

I use a 70/10 Microtex needle..and really, do not worry about the holes, if you steam it, the fibers will shrink around the thread again and all will be right with the world!

when your project is laundered the holes will close-
using a smaller- sharp needle will make them smaller also
