Need Ideas f/Sewing Caddy
#1
I will be traveling for about 3 weeks. Can't take a big sewing project so I plan on taking some redwork embroidery. Does anyone have some ideas on how to carry the project? What I have now is a plastic box that's just too bulky. A plastic ziplock baggie doesn't appeal to me either. Something pretty that lays flat and can fit easily into a suitcase would be ideal. Anyone have some ideas for it? I'll be carrying the basic needles, floss, scissors, etc. For some reason the little gray cells just can't come together on this. Any ideas are welcomed.

I keep mine in a cute make up bag from the dollar store. It is large enough for the 8" hoop, the fabric, and some floss (I do keep the floss in the snack size zip locks.) and a small pair of scissors.
I keep my needles in a pencil lead holder - the kind that come with mechanical pencils.
Might see what you can find that fits your style. The soft sides make it flat and easy to pack, carry, or store. I can even slip mine into my purse when I head out.

the makeup/travel bags that fold flat for travel then hang are also good. Plastic pockets in all sizes that zip closed. Plenty available to buy or easy to make - especially if you don't need the hangar in them and just add ties to close.

I am a big fan of those giant freezer zip lock baggies that don't appeal to you! LOL* Most of my current projects are stored that way!
I also like to re-use the bags that your linens often come in...you know how sometimes they have zippers? I have a few from a pillow sham set I purchased a while back that fit up to a 10" block in them and lie flat. Saves on ironing. ;)

I blogged about my favorite awhile back:
http://grendelskin.blogspot.com/2009...-handwork.html
This little case was designed for beading, but I've used it to transport my GFG hexies, clamshells, small crochet projects, and pies for the Pies & tarts quilt, and so far it's been great for every one. It doesn't fold flat but it does make a neat bundle that goes easily into carryon. I'm not affiliated with the manufacturer/dealer in any way, just love the product; I have 3 of the bag inserts and use it all the time, just swapping out the insert depnding on which project I take with me.

I have what I call my travel sewing kit that works great on the plane. I use one of the travel jewlery bags. There are a lot of compartments that are clear and zip closed and I can put fabric pcs in the largers ones and for large squares I just lay them inside before folding it closed.

I was given one of those little 'alligators' or 'crocodiles' that zip closed. It holds all my hand sewing items: needles, thread, small scissors, emery cushion, thimbles, binding clips, and more.
The I put all my handwork items in a tote with the alligator and off I go.
For my machine sewing I purchased a makeup tote at WalMart that is clear and has many zippered places and carry all my machine sewing paraphenalia in that.
