i love using silk threads for hand appliques. it is fine, easy to make tiny stitches; beautiful colors available. I also use wool, pearl cottons, cotton, poly and rayon threads...what ever thread fits my project is what i use.

Great info here. I don't do much applique because I find it hard to do. Now I think it may be the thread I was using!!

i can't find silk thread locally so i bought some synthetic (don't remember what kind) that has the same characteristics as silk in a beige color - it disappears into whatever color i'm working on. it's very thin and strong. but if i want it to show i use embroidery thread.

I use silk thread, a color that will match the applique pieces or a neutral that will blend in.

I love the silk threads, but they are pricey. I find that DMC 100% cotton machine embroidery thread 50 weight works well. I don't exactly match my thread to my fabric, but use a variety of neutral values and with a small stitch you don't really see they are not the same.

Superior makes the "Frosted donut" which is a set of 36 bobbins of all their colors, great for applique, when you need lots of colors and don't want to buy a whole spool of many colors.
I'm going to check the Superior website. Someone else also recommended this thread.

Superior now sells silk thread. I bought these two thread set a few years ago and still using them for all my hand sewing. It's all you need:

I bought a bunch of silk thread a while back. Hopefully this thread will get me back in the mood to hand applique.
