Baby quilts that I make are usually 45 x 60. The NICU quilts I make are 24 x 24.

Baby quilts sizes are all over the place! Since I use a longarm machine, it's really convenient if I can keep a small quilt under 42 inches wide. Then, I don't have to seam the back before I mount it on the machine to quilt it. :D

the smaller quilts 36x36 or 40x40 are handy to carry around. A nice size for a floor quilt. the larger crib sized 45x60 I think can be used longer. they can go on to cover a toddler bed or be a topper for a twin bed when baby is no longer in a crib.

24" X 24" are the smallest I make, for preemies/newborns.
40" X 40" sometimes, if the parent requests one for floor play, the stroller, etc...
45" X 60" are the most common size I make, as the child can use them longer :D:D:D

A crib mattress is 23" x 46" I think at least 40" and then 54" to 60" in length works great. They can use it for a long time and it can become a comforter when they graduate to a bigger bed.

I agree about not having to piece a backing. However, since I have started using minkee to back my baby quilts, I make them a bit bigger now. The minkee is WONDERFUL for babies.

Sometimes I make crib quilts 45" x 60", but sometimes I'll make a quilt for laying or sitting the baby on the floor about 52" square.
