Hi Guys,

How big should a baby quilt be?

Could you post pictures of baby quilts that you have made..... we have two new arrivals coming this year and I was thinking of making them a quilt each (if they are not too large).

I usually make mine about 40" square. That way, I don't have to piece the back.

I usually make them no larger than about 40x50. If you were to buy a panel, it would be roughly 36x45. I don't use panels very often anymore, but I usually added a border to that, but kept it under the width of the backing so I didn't have to piece it. If you were making a square, I'd make it at least 36".

I like to make them to last for a while, so usually 48" X 60"

I've made most at 36 by 48 inches. I have also done a 36" by 36".

All sizes have thier uses, with baby quilts. A smaller one is easier to carry around and put down for the baby to play on the floor, but it is outgrown faster. Having said that, the 36" by 36" one I made for my son he is using at age 2 1/2 on his bed. He gets hot easily and it's easy for him to kick off, but big enough to cover him up.

I also make them 48" or 50" x 60". But I have been known to go to 58 x 70 occasionally. I want it to be big enough for kids to use right into their teens. For the same reason, I don't use really baby prints but things that a kid would like until they are older. Sports, cars, sunglasses prints, stuff like that. Bright colors too.

The size thing has always been a dilemma for me, too. Guess it depends on how long you expect the child to be able to sleep under it, or be wrapped up in it.

Do people still wrap their babies up papoose style (I hope this is still an okay term) or burrito style? We did, but that was 50 years ago - and square blankets worked best for that -

Yep, it's still done! They call it "swaddling" now.... I did it with both my boys (3 and 6) and plan to do it with this baby when it is born in November. It sure seems to help!

I make mine 45x60. They are slightly too wide for a crib, but a little extra "blankie" never hurts.

Thanks - I couldn't remember the term "swaddling" - the only other thing I could think of was "mummy style"
