Hi

I've been saving baby receiving blankets for years, my daughters' and now grand kids. Of course they don't have similar colors or themes and even the sizes vary. But I would like to use them somehow.

Have any of you used these receiving blankets on quilts, for maybe backings or even on the tops?

Looking for ideas. Thanks

I think it would be wonderful to have quilts made from these. They would make cute squares, rag quilts, or pieced together for backings. :D:D:D
I don't know how easily you could hand quilt through them, maybe someone else here has tried?

I would definitely machine piece and quilt these....I don't do any hand quilting at all.

I think amma has the right idea.

I used them as batting. They were pretty faded and had some stains on them so I used them inside the quilt. If your blankets are in good shape, I think a quilt made with them would be neat. I'd probably use it as the backing.

Okay hold on to your teeth. I actually use new 5 packs of recieving blankets to make my baby quilts. They come already color coordinated and are just about the right yardage for the top of the quilt. I know not the greatest of material to start out with, but so many baby quilts get stains and take such hard use that I wanted something inexpensive and durable to start with. I can also tell with that gift of this first quilt, whether or not the person would respect a real quilt (I know sounds harsh, but we all know the stories). If they (the parents) are appreciative and look as though they are trying to care for this quilt then a gift of a large quilt comes at about age three and then really close realtives at about age 10 and 18. That is the plan in my mind.

But yes use them, let them love them. Here is a pic of a quilt I made using 5 coordinated recieving blankets. Sorry these are not of it completed. Cannot seem to find those now!

My daughter wanted to keep her two children's receiving blankets and not have them cut up, so I just sewed them together, put batting in between them. Makes a nice warm blanket during the winter.

Panther that is a great idea for new baby quilts....it looks very soft too.

Mine are still in great shape but hardly color coordinated but I think you've given me a good idea of what I could do with them, but scrappy.

Using them to piece backings for kids quilts would work too.

I am using my DGD's baby blankets to make a small snuggle quilt for her. She can keep the familiar fabrics close to her and still have a more grown-up (5 years old) quilt to love.
