Batik fabric is a higher thread count than most quilting cottons, so it's a bit 'crisper' to start with. Lots of dye adds to the stiffness of some, and I've found that sometimes it seems like the wax hasn't been totally washed out, I prewash in hot water.

It depends on the batik. I think it is the heat of the washing process that shrinks and condenses the weave. They are super though for raw edge appliqué since they fray a lot less than regular cotton fabric.

Love batiks, but agree that sometimes that continue to be stiff after washing, even after several times. Any suggestions to soften them up? Have tried washing several times and adding fabric softener.
Ay ideas?

Now, that makes sense. I'm going to try that the next time I get a batik!
