I have used wool and it doesn't shrink as much as the cotton batts I've used.

It's said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this beholder thinks your quilt is pretty. The suggestions to use cotton batting are right on, in my opinion.

The quilt I made with a wool bat didn't shrink much. I washed it cold water and didn't use the dryer, which might have had something to do with it not shrinking much. I would think using a cotton bat and drying it in the dryer on a warmer setting would help make it crinkly. Good luck and tell us what you choose to do.

Use a cotton batting and wash/dry on hot. I would hesitate on the unwashed flannel backing, as that may shrink more than your batting . . . which may result in some weird shaping.

However, you could use several layers of unwashed flannel for the batting.

BTW, I LIKE your "ugly" quilt!

My one experience with 100% wool batting (unwashed) and handquilting was that the batting shrunk like crazy when I washed the finished quilt, and I ended up unpicking the whole thing. Now that's wrinkly!

I'd use 100% cotton. When it is washed, it will give you that vintagey feel that I think you're going for. Love the quilt, BTW!

I don't see anything ugly about the quilt. Perhaps if one is not used to this kind of color palette.
But most girls would love to have it!

Thank you everyone for the many compliments. I've been rearranging blocks every since posting picture and am now ready to assemble rows. My husband normally helps with this part, he really has an eye for arranging the colors, but he left on a deployment two months ago and won't be back for another 10 months. I really miss his help.

Coffeebreak, yes, for this quilt I do want as much wrinkling as possible. I do know what you mean about hoping/almost praying a quilt won't shrink. I made a quilt for my youngest daughter, 30 yo, and didn't want any wrinkling at all. Guess what, it shrunk drastically. I was so upset, almost cried and I'm not normally a cryer over such things. This quilt just needs the wrinkley look.
