Can bed sheets bed used in quilting? I am sure they can be, but I'm not sure how it would turn out or if it would be good quailty. I have old sheets that we no longer use and instead of tossing them out I thought that using them for quilting would be a better idea....and an easy, cheap way to start a small stash. What do you think?

Sheets are OK if they are soft. If you are machine quilting or tying them, it is fine to use sheets. It may be hard to hand quilt through a tight weave. I worked with a church group that made charity quilts and we used sheets on all of our backings. We were tying the quilts.

When I first started quilting, all i used for backings was sheets. Cheaper, softer, just loved using them. I stopped when they changed how they made them, sheets now are very thin, or rough after several washings. Now it is just cheaper to buy backing. I have some older sheets from my Grandmother. I plan on making a quilt, to match it. its on my to do list.

I use sheets for most of my backings, I look at the thrift stores for them, don't find them often but usually often enough to keep up with the quilts I finish. I havn't used them in my piecing but my mom and grandma used them all the time.

I use them all the time. Its very economical. If your putting your quilt in a show I wouldnt, but for everyday use they work great. Stay away from high thread count, your needle will rip through the fabric instead of passing through it.

Our Project Linus chapter uses old, discarded sheets to roll and fill the weighted blankets we make.

back in the "olden days" of quilting - 1970's. the recommendation was cotton muslin sheets. Thread count was easy to quilt. So have to see how it will needle.
I bought one at guild meeting last week to just quilt as the top.
