How often do you buy a new mat? I have had my first one now for a year and 3 months? I have a few groves in it. And also found a mat smoother. Have any of you used one of these before? I tried it and it took the batting out of the groves and seemed to smooth the mat some. By the way what have all of you done with your old mats just throw them away? I found the smoother at Hancock Fabrics yesterday.

Hi there, I only use the Olfa seal healing mats & if used correctly ...they don't need replacing after many years. The first one I ever had I didn't know how to properly use a rotary cutter & held it slanted so in the end, cut little channels in my mat. The one I'm using now is like new after many quilts. The old one hides under the bed & I bring it out when cutting fleece or batting so that the newer one doesn't get such hard wear. I have seen people take their old boards & cut out the "good" patches to use for smaller boards for taking to classes or whatever.

When I first started sewing a friend got me my mat for christmas. She got me the fiskers. I think the sticker that used to be on the back said that it was self healing. But like you said I also have a small canal or two also.
